Finally, there is a new room to play in Joensuu. “Witch of the Enchanted Forest” has been completed at the new address Teollisuuskatu 11 B and the booking calendar for the game is now open! ?

In celebration of the opening of the room, we will organize a competition between all the groups that played during the following month (15.01 – 15.02). We have set a secret time between 40 minutes and 60 minutes for the room and the group that passes the room during this time will win a € 100 cash prize! If after a month no group has hit this time, the winner is the group whose time was closest to the secret time ?

In the summer we will move to new bigger premises, where we will build three new games!
Our current games, Pirate Ship, Secret Laboratory and Virtual Reality Room can be booked at Torikatu 19 until 9.5.21 ?
Our new address starting from 1.6.21 is Teollisuuskatu 11 and we will open a booking calendar for new games as the rooms are completed! ?

Following the accident in Poland at the beginning of the year, comprehensive inspections were carried out in Finland about the fire safety of offices and especially escape games. Whenever a new field is released in the world, it takes its own time for it to become the norm. Prior to this, businesses seek to act in the best possible way, for example in terms of safety. However, many may have a distorted view of safety: “Escape games are not an extreme hobby, nothing dangerous can happen here” and the necessary corrections are not made on the basis of this idea. I myself thought this way in the past, before the Polish case. Although escape games are generally safe, a fire can come, for example, from a neighboring store and proceed to an escape room. Sure, we have emergency keys in the games, but in a panic, they can be tricky to use. The most important fix for us was that “game exit must be made keyless.” It was easy to replace the exterior doors with a green emergency latch instead of a door handle. There were a few cases inside the game where the emergency latch didn’t fit the theme in any way and we ended up modifying the locking mechanism itself differently. At the same time, we put a lighted exit sign above the exterior doors of the game rooms to help visibility in the event of a power outage. In addition to these, the premises have extinguishing equipment and first aid equipment. With regard to the changes made, we received approval from the fire inspector for our prompt response and exemplary action on repairs. In September 2020, we will open a virtual reality game room in Joensuu. In the world of Virtual Reality, it is possible to experience really great experiences that would not be possible in real life. For example, you can fly at the height of skyscrapers or dive into the depths of the seas, fight orcs, or move at bullet speed. The game room can be booked either alone or with up to two others. The price of the reservation does not change by the number of participants, but there is an hourly rate for the room. Each booking also includes a 5-20 minute free training session in the VR world, which goes through the operation of the controllers and navigating the virtual world. The game room has one set of VR glasses, which means that if you book a room for two or three, you can change the player wearing the classes during the booking. The game is designed to require adults and adult guidance to pass, but tasks have also been done with the youngest in the family in mind. Both of our premises are open again! All rooms have been disinfected before opening and we also disinfect the rooms from time to time between games.
In our lobby you will find hand sanitizer that must be used when coming to play. Playing while sick is still strictly forbidden.
We have also extended the validity of all gift cards by six months.

My name is Ari Pölönen, owner of Pakotarinat. I got into escape rooms in 2015, when I was building escape games to another company. Right in the building process, I noticed how fun escape rooms were and not long after that I was already planning on my own escape room. I’ve tried to challenge myself whenever I’m building a room to try new mechanisms or different kind of visuals. Below is one video when I was starting on building the barrels and the cannon to Pirateship. Below are almost finished versions of these props.

There is different difficulties in Crime Mystery starting from 20.01.2017: Medium and Hard. The Medium -difficulty is mainly for 2-6 person groups and beginners. The Hard -difficulty is for 6-10 person groups and more experienced players. Medium -difficulty is not a run through, there is still challenge involved, there is just less puzzles. The puzzles are also linear, so that smaller groups wouldn’t have to break up too much. Hard -difficulty on the other hand is also not impossible, but there is more challenge to it, if there is more players in the group, that can divide to multiple directions throughout the game. Also the more experienced players in smaller groups should enjoy the added difficulty.

Pakotarinat is a room escape company in Espoo Leppävaara starting from 9.12.2016 and in Joensuu starting from 19.10.2018. Our story began in winter 2015, when we were building the first escape rooms in Joensuu with the local operative. We hadn’t heard from escape rooms before, but we went completely nuts over them. The whole concept intrigued us; how the themes were done, the genius and exciting ways the puzzles were built and the idea of just having fun together 🙂 After these first rooms we designed and built our own room – Crime Mystery. We have run our own room since February 2016 and it has gained quite a popularity in this region.

Our first room

Building an escape room was tough but interesting experience. We started by deciding what the theme should be and at first we based it on our own interests. Different kind of crime stories were very interesting and they even fit the room escape idea well. We also wanted to bring something more to the game and decided to add a hint of 50’s film noir to it. We designed the puzzles to be logical and functional, but finding the right time to solve the puzzles required testing. At this point we also noticed another important factor; room escapes were very new thing to most of the people (at least in this region) and with this in mind, we changed the room to be more like “get to know room escapes”. Over all, this change helped extremely, but when we removed one problem, we encountered another one; the room needs to work fluently when there are new people playing and also, when there’s experienced players involved. To make this happen, we kept the puzzles easily approachable, but created difficulty through diversity of the puzzles. And when we finally thought our room was “done”, we encountered numerous small defects. Usually they didn’t affect game play in any way, but in some rare occasions proved problematic. The most memorable of these was one color puzzle. The solution for the puzzle was in different colors and it was important, that they doesn’t get mix up. One time we had a red-green colorblind person playing and he said he couldn’t see the colors correctly and finally we understood what was problem with the puzzle. Quite frankly, we never even thought about this kind of possibility and from now on, we’ve tried to take as many disabilities into consideration when we design our puzzles.

What now?

Even though the building process of a room is very laborious, it’s also very rewarding when the room works. After the first room, we have a lot of experience to build a room escape -room and we’re eager to build more 🙂 The last games in Joensuu are played in 26.11.2016 and after this our story continues in Espoo. We planned to keep the Crime Mystery about the same as it is now, but we might change it later to be more like “Escape room of Espoo” 🙂
